Team WTF?! is a loose association of a handful of Washington, D.C. area
autocrossers. The name was hatched when two of the founding
members were doing a course walk in the rain at the DC ProSolo in June
2004.
The Answer is the question.

A belated report on the Team WTF?! showing (if you can call it that) at MARRS 5 race weekend. MARRS 4 was missed due to family issues. The weekend started the prior week in typical WTF fashion. With the Team WTF?! SRF on tires with about 20 heat cycles, it turned out that NO new tires were available. Bummer. A post on the Spec Racer forum scored 1 set of unmounted new tires and an offer of a set of mounted tires from a local racer who had not turned a lap this year. So, with that hurdle over, on to the weekend.
The practice day went well with finding some lost time as the recent shock rebuild seemed to cure the final handling weirdness. Had a chance to have a former National Champion run the car to see things are. The good news is the car has good power. Running the heat cycled out tires there was no grip of course, but with the lack of grip he was only running about 1 second quicker than my laps.
Last session scrubbed the new tires and was set for the weekend. First qualifying session was OK, but the speed wasn’t there. The second qualifying session had everyone running 1.5 to 2 seconds slower than the morning session, but I managed to only slow down by about 0.7 seconds, so it seemed that I was running about 0.8 faster than the morning. And the session felt good. So even with a final qualifying position of 14th, things were looking up.
Race day and WTF?! struck HARD at the start. What can I say? It was horrible. Got shoved wide in Turn 1 and lost 5 places. OK, that sucked. Second lap, turn 1, a car spun, and boom, my race was over. Radiator was gone, more nose damage, race over. So quick I got to see most of the race from pit wall, in street clothes

The 2006 Ron Katona Memorial Autocross was this past weekend and Team WTF?! was up to its usual tricks. The event was a fundraiser for the Ron Katona Motorsports Foundation, and there were a number of fun activities...some with a true Team WTF?! flavor. Some of the highlights were the the Green Machine competition and the hecklers (many of which were provided by Team WTF?!).
The heckler idea was a really inspired one. For a measly $3 donation, you could put a heckler in your competitor's car. For $6, you could put two hecklers in his car if there were enough open seats. A driver could bar entry for a heckler by matching the $3 donation. To hear what a run with a couple hecklers on board was like, watch one of Clyde's first two runs: the one where he spun and the one where he went off course without being called off course (warning, big files, the usual language, and a little bit of ass crack, but for those who are worried, no full bodied mooning).
In A Street Prepared, Bren got whooped by his codriver, Brian H, who was not quite as whooped by two others, but still only managed a 3rd place finish to Bren's 4th place. Of course, we can't speak about a whooping without mentioning Nick's 6th of 17 return to A Street Prepared. While Bren took some heckling like a man (on a run that turned out to be his fastest of the day), Nick bought out all hecklers that were hired to ride with him. "I can't afford it. The potential damage to NickStein Tuning could be irreparable. See, our reputation hinges on our professionalism, you see the way that I dress. Aiding or assisting in this heckling nonsense...well, nothing good could come from it." Bren was a little more upbeat. "I think Brian H found 1.5 of Nick's three seconds, and he's not giving them back." Brian H could not be reached for comment and no one knows why.
In B Street Prepared, Team WTF?! newcomer, Bobbie took second place, just a scant 2.976 seconds behind the class winner, Lee Piccione. "Nick was helping. You know."
A Stock saw John V and Ken swapping spit, er seats in John V's Boxster. John V could barely stay off the cones in his first three runs, but managed to put together a run that could only be described as, uh, "quick" on his fourth and final run. "Yeah, I laid a smackdown on the rest of A Stock today. Imagine what's going to happen when we have more than just tires on this car." What about the GXP, John V? "Shut up, Ted." Ken took a solid if silent third place. "." was all the man had to say.
Over in B Stock, Clyde had one thing to say, "Tire smoke really stinks." With a spectacular spin (short video of just the spin) that had him eating bits of tire and asphalt on his first run, he collected no less than 2 cones on each run (sometimes as many as 7 or more). Yet he still placed midpack in B Stock.
The 2006 Ron Katona Memorial Autocross was quite an enjoyable event for all of Team WTF?! and we are proud to have had the opportunity to contribute with our heckling skills, which hopefully made the event more enjoyable for more people. |

Photos available here. Videos coming soon. (yeah, we know you've heard it before, but we mean it this time) In a very Team WTF?! manner, this report was filed 12 days late...and probably $12 short, but we'll mail you a check right after we get the sway bar from Saner. There was a perfect storm brewing for the weekend of the DC Pro Solo. More entries than ever before in a Pro, a weather forecast that called for three straight days of biblically proportioned storms, and the same old dead nuts reliable timing gear. Oh, and on top of all that, there were over 40 first timers as well. Nothing to worry about, right? Oddly enough, it all went pretty smoothly. The Team WTF?! effect was still in full force for the weekend, however. |
