The 2009 NCCBMWCCA Drivers’ School season is about to begin. We hope that many of you will join us this year for our Drivers’ School events whether you are seasoned Drivers’ School veteran or new to the Drivers’ School program. The NCCBMWCCA is a fun group of motivated individuals that encourage new members to participate in these fun, safe, learning driving environments. This year the National Capital Chapter (NCC) will be putting on 3 weekend events in Summit Point, West Virginia. The first Drivers’ School event will be hosted at the Summit Point Main Circuit, a 10 turn 2.0 mile circuit with 400 foot elevation changes and 2900 foot front straight, March 21 and 22, 2009. The second Drivers’ School event will be hosted at the Summit Point Shenandoah Circuit, an 18 turn 1.8 mile circuit sporting a dimensional replica of the one of the Nurburgring’s more famous turns, the Karussell, with 20 degree banking, May 30 and 31, 2009. Our last Drivers’ School event for 2009 will be hosted at the Summit Point Jefferson Circuit, a 7 turn 1.1 mile circuit that is a very technical composite of 7 of the most difficult corners that Bill Scott ever encountered, October 10 and 11, 2009.
In addition, the National Capital Chapter will host a Highway Safety School (Car Control Clinic) at the Maryland State Police Training Center, in Sykesville, MD, and is currently scheduled for June 27, 2009. The Highway Safety School is a safe environment to learn car control skills in a low speed environment with an instructor coaching you through the maneuvers from the right seat. There is no need to buy a helmet to attend the highway safety school since one can request a loaner helmet that meets Snell Foundation SA2000 or SA2005 safety ratings from
OG Racing at a modest rental cost of $35-$40 per event.
The National Capital Chapter Drivers’ Schools strive to give you the opportunity to develop and improve your skills as a driver and to strengthen your knowledge of your car's abilities, so that you will be prepared for any situation you may encounter on the highway. Our Drivers’ Schools are not racing schools. There is no need to perform any modifications to your car prior to coming to one of our NCC Drivers’ Schools. The NCC strongly encourages Drivers’ School participants to attend our Drivers’ Schools with street cars on street tires with no performance modifications to enhance the overall learning experience. The only thing we ask is that your car undergo a pre-event technical inspection at an independent BMW service center to ensure that the car is safe prior to attending an NCC Drivers’ School; there are many service centers listed on the NCC website that perform pre-event technical inspections at no or little cost. Each Drivers’ School consists of driving sessions on the track, car control sessions on the wet skidpad, and classroom sessions. During your on-track sessions, you will be driving the full track at progressively higher speeds throughout the school. An in-car instructor will work with you to help you improve your driving mechanics. Braking, cornering, and accelerating techniques are refined continuously during your on-track sessions. Our focus is on skill, not speed, and our overriding concern is with your safety and that of your car.
Your BMW is an amazingly capable car. National Capital Chapter Drivers’ Schools allow you to realize your car's capabilities, learn the limits of those capabilities under controlled conditions, and practice the skills needed to control your car safely within those limits. So come on out and give a try to a 2009 NCC Drivers’ School. Registration is handled via USPS using forms that will be available on the NCC website. So get off the couch after a long winter’s nap and see what your BMW can really do for you. See you at the track! Your BMW will thank you!
