Road Racing With Team WTF?!

MARRS 1 (Mid Atlantic Road Racing Series) weekend at Summit Point started out in true Team WTF?! fashion. Arrived at the track a bit late on Friday and missed the first practice session. No big deal.
Getting into the car for the second session, I asked twice about the tire pressures and was assured that they were set and checked. Now the new tires had some early problems with pressures going down quickly, but my set has not had a problem, so the assumption was, pressures fine early, pressures fine now. Yeah, right.
For the first couple of laps, I took it easy getting everything up to temperature. The car felt a little loose, but not too bad. It always feels a little loose with the current setup. I picked up the pace and went into 4 (the Chute) flat out and WHAP! Around it went. Spun down the left side of the track and was doing fine, until the guy I was following braked for 5. So we came together and damaged my right front corner, his left rear corner. Back in the pits, the left rear tire had 9 psi, versus the 31 hot we look for. It turns out the metal valve stem got loose and as the speed went up, the valve leaked air. Everything was fixed over lunch and was able to take the afternoon sessions. The car still felt a bit loose. Not too bad, but a little slower than expected.
Qualifying on Saturday went pretty well. Still wasn’t happy with the fell, but managed to qualify 14th out of 32 cars. We ran Group 7, so had a nice leisurely morning, before heading to the track. The start went OK and I was running well, but unable to gain any places. As of lap 4 there was still a 15 or so car train (I was in13th due to a car not getting underway off the false grid). When I came over the hill between 9 and 10, the leaders were in 10. “WOW! Awesome,” was the thought. Followed closely by, “oops, if something happens up front, I am close enough to be involved. Oh well enjoy it.” Then exiting 5 a car ahead got way loose. The car in front of me tried to duck below and pass, but spun in doing so. I went high, but got the right side in the dirt and spun. Got it turned around and going again. The lap charts later showed this dropped me to 20th.
So I was now chasing Elizabeth Miller (who runs the FATT program at Summit) and while I couldn’t quite catch her, together we ran a nice pace. We both seem to run faster with someone to chase or pace. We managed to claw our way back to 13th and 14th by the finish. While the finishing position was not the greatest (the guy who got loose that we were following managed to finish in 6th) the race was still a memorable high point. The claw back up from 20th to 14th in a spec class is a nice accomplishment. Team WTF?! SRF will miss the double regional at VIR due to work/professional conflicts, so the next race is June 10 – 11 at Summit Point. Come see the fun, and you don’t even have to get up early, as we are the LAST group to run. Next step with the handling is to have the shocks dyno’d and rebuilt if needed. I think they will need it.

Well, suffice it to say that this weekend was very interesting. For those few of you whom I haven't blathered endlessly to, I went down to the Tarheel BMWCCA Club Race at VIR this weekend. This was my very first race weekend, so my primary goal was to avoid hitting anyone and/or balling up the car. Luckily, I fulfilled my primary goal.
Unfortunately, this weekend was absolutely plagued by mechanical problems. On my first session out, I noticed that the car was behaving strangely - transitional response was not good. The uphill esses were pretty terrifying, and the clanking through hogpen was really not encouraging. Eventually this was diagnosed as a blown out (again!) right front Advance-Design strut. Unfortunately, no one had the tools I needed to open the little fucker up, so I was restricted to adding nitrogen every session.
Even more interesting was the faint smell of fuel. After several failed attempted to diagnose, we gave up looking for it. Until I brimmed the tank for the enduro, that is. With fuel spilling out, we had to park the car. Eventually, we found the leak (a hole that a friend's crewman had drilled into the fuel tank while installing my fire system - ironically this was for the nozzles he ran TO the fuel tank) and patched it up with a screw and some JB Weld. This got me all set for Sunday and the sprint race.
I qualified adequately, with rain screwing up our session. Third in class (KP). I didn't want to stress the car too much, so I only ran a few laps. The race was an absolute blast. I had a fantastic start - I gained something like six places overall and got up to second in KP. Unfortunately, the bad strut was making the car's handling downright awful. I was losing an enormous amount of speed in Hogpen, which absolutely killed me on the straight. Just imagine having a jackhammer going on one side of the car. Now imagine a swaybar transmitting the vibrations to the outside tire. I'm sure you can imagine what that did for my grip levels. Eventually, something really went in the shock and I ended up understeering off the track there. I kept my foot in it and drove through for a while, but the tail started coming around in a big way so I just locked up the tires. It isn't worth trying a big save off-track - you might save it, but more often tryign too hard results in hitting something hard and/or rolling the car. About all I can say for my finish is that I wasn't DFL. Barely.
But I'll be back and next time the car will actually be working.
I'll post pictures and video at some point. |

Team WTF?! ran the Summit Point National event this weekend in true Team WTF?! style. Bottom line - handling problems, power problems, rain, miserable, but a great race! |

Team WTF?! traveled to VIR to open the racing season in the newly (at least partially) repainted Team WTF?! Spec Racer Ford. The weekend was to be Fri practice, Sat practice, qualifying and a 1.5 hour enduro, then Sun another 1.5 hour enduro and a 10 lap sprint race. Typical WTF weekend followed. Crash, fix, massive run through the field, 83rd to 19th overall. |

October was a good month for the Team WTF?! Spec Racer Ford with three top 10 in class finishes. The month started with the last race of the MARRS series. The first part of the weekend was very wet, which lead to discovering that the Team WTF?! car and driver LIKE the wet. This resulted in a row four (7th) starting grid position. It was interesting to actually be able to SEE the green flag at the start. After a couple of incidents (not involving Team WTF?!) and a close dice throughout the race, Team WT?! claimed its first top 10 finish with 9th overall out of 25 starters. |
