(Update: on car video available here )

Team WTF?! headed west to get a jump on an early start to the 2006 season at the San Diego National Tour.  John V and Clyde somehow managed to hoodwink someone into loaning them a Cadillac CTS-V for the weekend (thanks, rwg! ).   It was 2,700 miles from home.  It had all the makings of getting the 2006 season off in true Team WTF?! style.  If that's the kind of story that you're looking for, you're in luck.

Before competing in San Diego, the Team WTF?! drivers had to travel to San Diego.  Easy you may say...hop on a plane and you'll be there in a few hours.  Easy, yeah.  There are the wives, girlfriends and children left behind.  There are sudden projects at work that need attention.  Then there are the snow storms that keep planes on the ground in one location when they should be departing other locations.  The multiple gate changes (made more fun by the cattle-class boarding procedures of a certain Mickey mouse airline).  The multiple trips to the airport spread hours apart for flights that were coordinated with arrival times five minutes apart. Yeah..easy.

Friday, Team WTF?! got acquainted with the CTS-V.  Surprise, surprise...the car was on the oversteery side of neutral on the practice course.  John V and Clyde found themselves quite surprised at how much fun the car was to toss around.  While it certainly felt like a pig, it didn't feel quite like the big pig it really is.  Then came the rain during the work shift.  In San Diego.  Rain in San Diego.  WTF?!  Floor mats lying in the paddock...what are you gonna do? :dunno:

Team WTF?! CTS-V

Saturday's course flowed well and was pretty quick.  Of course, it wouldn't be a Team WTF?! event without racking up some cones, and that's what John V and Clyde did...six cones in their first four combined runs.  They were able to clean things up and drop their scratch times down as well on their third runs and found themselves on 0.030 seconds apart at the end of the day...but 2.1 seconds behind the class leader...a BMW E39 M5.  F Stock, people...this is F Stock.  The class of Mustangs and Camaros saw only CTS-Vs, M5s and AMG Benzes at the San Diego Tour.  WTF?!  At the end of Saturday, John V was sitting in second and Clyde in third.

Sunday is where it all came apart in a way that no one else can do quite like Team WTF?!  John v and Clyde thought that they might be able to settle the rear down by filling up a little extra gas.  Well, in the most objective terms, that was a piss-poor idea. The soon-to-be posted video will show just how bright an idea that was.  As Clyde's daughter would say, "What was Daddy thinking about?" :dunno:  And then there was the air tank that only seemed to want to lose air when attached to a compressor.  (Thanks to the kind lady with the MINI that lent us her compressor on Sunday.)  We could tell you about how the competition turned out on Sunday, but if you've followed Team WTF?! over the past year or so, you already know what happened.  We were outdriven by someone that finished behind us on Saturday and dropped to third and fourth.

Plenty of WTF?! moments throughout the weekend.  The forgotten sunblock, forgotten gum, extra gum on the shoesoles, the poor directions dictated by faulty memory, the license plate issues with the police, and all the other assorted moments and memories of another Team WTF?! National Tour event.

Like last year's San Diego Tour (aka Clyde-Stuka Autocross Challenge), Team WTF?! had fun, with a slightly more serious effort this time around.  We made a lot of new friends, enjoyed the company of some existing friends and, hopefully, didn't make too many enemies this time around.  Look for on car video and data log materials posted in the next few days.
