My second race weekend was on the North Course at VIR on July 28th and 29th.  I still had my provisional license and needed to get through the weekend without any incidents.  Read further to see just how many WTF moments I had in getting my full license...

Saturday started out well.  I had an alright practice run and qualified 19 out of 22 with a 1:53 best lap.  The race started well, I got to the inside of turn 1 and passed another Spec E30.  I stayed in that position for one more lap and then one of front runners that had gone off track was making his way back up the pack.  On turn 7 (the uphill after the bridge) he braked late got the inside and pushed me to the outside and I dropped my driver side rear tire pretty hard.  After that the car would loose all power and then have it kick back in, just to kick back out again (WTF Moment #1.)  So unfortunately I had to pull of the track and didn’t finish the race.  Although after talking to Terry, he suggested that I should have limped around the track to a couple more laps to complete 1/2 of the race and get credit instead of getting a DNF, I was more worried about what was going on with the car at that time.

Then the trouble shooting began.  It was either electrical or fuel related and I started checking all of the sensors and power to the fuel pump.  They all checked out good.  I did a ECU swap and the problem was still there.  Next I pulled the fuel pump and found an issue that wasn't causing the current problem but would have been a problem in the future.  The PO RTV’d the fuel pump to the tank and the RTV was jelling up and hanging in the tank.  So I cleaned all of that up but still had the original problem.  Finally I started replacing relays and when I got to the fuel pump relay I found that it was sitting loosely on the connector only making intermittent contact.  I pushed it back in, zip-tied it and was good to go.  Why didn't I check that first???  Unfortunately I missed practice but was able to qualify 18 out 21 with a 1.53 best lap.

The race was a lot of fun.  I had a really bad start as I was not able to get to the inside of turn 1 and had to drive in the marbles and lost 2 positions.  I was able to pass both of those cars again and pass two additional SE30’s to finish 16th of 21 with a best lap of 1.52.  I had a lot of fun during the race trying different tactics to pass the guys coming out of a turn.

I still have a long way to go, but I am having a blast doing it.  The only other WTF moments were breaking my hood release lever after Sunday's qualifying (thank god I didn't have to do any additional work) and not getting any video footage of the entire weekend because I now know that you cannot close the LCD screen on the camera or it shuts off… DOH!!!  The good thing about the weekend was that even though technically I didn't finish Saturday's race I still got signed off for both of them and now have a NASA racing license.  Unfortunately I am going to miss the next race leaving only one more for the season.  Then we let the winter projects begin.
